Drain Cleaning in Oregon
Clearing the blockage is routine. Knowing whether you had a clog or a failing pipe, and being able to show you which, is what stops you paying for the same call every six months.
Same-day service statewide. Camera verification included on main line clearances.

Work out what you are dealing with first
Before anything gets cabled, it is worth establishing whether the problem is one fixture or the whole building, because they are different jobs with different urgency.
If a single sink, tub or shower is slow and everything else runs normally, the blockage is local, in the trap or the branch line serving that fixture. Annoying, rarely urgent, usually quick.
If several fixtures are affected, or if using one fixture makes another back up, flushing the toilet brings water up in the shower, running the washing machine floods a floor drain, the blockage is downstream where those branches meet, in the main line. That is urgent. The next thing anyone puts down a drain has nowhere to go but up, and in a basement or ground-floor bathroom that means sewage in the building.
Gurgling from a fixture you are not using, a toilet whose level rises and falls on its own, and a smell of sewer gas all point the same direction. So does a floor drain in a basement or garage that has water in it when nothing has been running.
What actually blocks Oregon drains
Kitchen lines block with grease more than anything else. Grease goes down warm and liquid, cools in the horizontal run, and coats the pipe wall a little more with every wash-up until the opening is the diameter of a pencil. Food debris and coffee grounds then catch on that coating. Garbage disposals make it worse, not better, they reduce the size of the solids without changing the fact that they are going into a pipe with a grease lining.
Bathroom lines block with hair bound together by soap scum, almost always within a couple of feet of the drain. Tubs and showers are the usual victims.
Main lines are a different category. West of the Cascades, root intrusion dominates, the Willamette Valley grows big trees in wet ground, and a mature maple, poplar or fir will find any joint or crack in a sewer lateral and colonise it. Older Portland neighborhoods with clay tile laterals and street trees of the same age as the housing are the textbook case. Then there is the pipe itself: clay tile that has shifted at the joints, cast iron that has scaled and lost diameter, or an Orangeburg lateral that has deformed into an oval.
Wipes are the modern universal cause, in every region and both residential and commercial. Nothing labelled flushable breaks down at the rate the packaging implies, and they snag on anything already in the line.
Multiple fixtures backing up at once means the main, not the sink. Say so when you call.

Cabling, a rotating steel cable with a cutting or retrieving head, is the direct approach. It bores through the obstruction and, with the right head, cuts roots. It is fast, it works in small branch lines a jetter cannot enter, and on a hair clog or a solid object it is exactly the right tool.
Its limitation is that it makes a hole. In a grease-coated line, a cable punches an opening through the grease and restores flow, leaving the coating on the pipe wall to close back up over the following months. That is why a kitchen line that gets cabled every spring keeps needing it.
Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water through a nozzle that pulls itself along the pipe, scouring the full circumference back to the original pipe wall. It removes grease and sludge properly rather than perforating them, and it flushes the debris out instead of leaving it in the line. On a commercial kitchen line, a recurring residential grease problem, or a main line with accumulated sludge, it is the method that actually fixes the situation. We cover it in detail under hydro jetting.
Jetting is not universal. It needs an access point and adequate pipe condition, a badly deteriorated clay or Orangeburg line can be damaged by it, which is one more reason to look before choosing a method. On a simple hair clog it is overkill.
Chemical drain cleaners deserve a mention only to be discouraged. Caustic products rarely clear a real blockage, they sit in the trap generating heat, they damage older pipe and chrome, and they turn the next visit into a hazard for whoever opens the line. If you have poured some in, tell the plumber before they start.
Why camera verification matters
A cleared drain and a healthy drain are not the same thing, and without a camera nobody can honestly tell you which one you have.
On main line work we run a camera after clearing, and you watch it with us. That answers the questions that decide whether you are about to spend money again: was this a blockage or a structural fault; are there roots, and are they at one joint or throughout; is the pipe holding its shape; is there a belly where water and solids will pool from now on; how far out is the problem, and is it on your side of the property line or the city side.
The last point is not academic. If the fault is in the public main, it is not your bill, and the footage is what establishes that. If it is in your lateral, the footage is what a sensible repair quote is built on, and what you use to compare quotes.
We do not charge separately for a post-clearance camera pass on a main line clearance. A pre-purchase sewer scope is a scheduled inspection in its own right and is priced as one.
Tell us if it is a kitchen, a bathroom or a whole-house backup, different tool.
Book Same-Day ServiceMain line backups
A main line backup is the one drain problem that qualifies as an emergency. Everything in the building drains into that pipe, so once it is blocked there is nowhere for waste to go but back into the lowest fixtures, a basement floor drain, a ground-floor shower, a downstairs toilet.
Stop using water immediately, including appliances that drain on a timer. If sewage has come up, keep people and pets away from it; it is a biological hazard, not just a mess. If you have an accessible cleanout and it is safe to open, doing so can relieve pressure and send the overflow outside instead of into the house, but expect what comes out, and do not open one in a confined basement without thinking it through.
We clear from the cleanout where there is one. Where there is not, access is via a roof vent or by pulling a toilet, both of which are more work, and fitting a proper cleanout afterwards is usually worth it if the line has a history.
When it keeps coming back
A drain that blocks once is a blockage. The same drain blocking twice a year is a symptom, and repeat cabling is a subscription rather than a repair.
The causes worth investigating are: grease that has never actually been removed, which jetting resolves; roots re-entering at a joint, which come back on a predictable cycle and eventually need the joint repaired or the lateral lined or replaced; a belly in the line where settlement has created a low section that collects solids; a partially collapsed or offset section; and, occasionally, a venting problem, where the drain is not blocked at all but cannot draw air and therefore will not flow.
The diagnosis is the same in every case: put a camera in it. Guessing costs more over three years than looking does once.
Keeping drains clear
Grease goes in the bin, not the sink, wipe pans out with kitchen roll before washing. Strainers in every kitchen and bathroom drain, emptied rather than pushed through. Nothing flushed but waste and toilet paper, whatever the packet says about the wipes.
Hot water down the kitchen drain after washing up helps a little; enzyme treatments used monthly help more than caustic cleaners ever will, because they digest the organic film rather than punching through it. Neither substitutes for jetting a line that is already coated.
If you have mature trees near the sewer lateral, particularly with an older clay or cast iron line, a camera inspection every few years catches root intrusion while it is still a cleaning job. On commercial kitchens, a scheduled jetting cycle, typically quarterly or semi-annual depending on volume, is dramatically cheaper than an emergency closure during service.
Recurring in the same drain? The pipe is usually telling you something.

Drain cleaning, answered
Same-day in most of the state for a standard drain call, and immediately for a main line backup with sewage entering the building. Remote eastern and Gorge addresses may be next-day for non-urgent work.
We would rather you did not. They seldom clear a real blockage, they damage older pipe, and they create a genuine hazard for the plumber who opens the line afterwards. A plunger or a hand auger on a slow sink is a much better first attempt.
Hair clogs, solid objects and small branch lines: cabling. Grease, sludge, recurring blockages and commercial kitchen lines: jetting. On a main line we often cable to restore flow, camera it, then recommend jetting if the pipe is coated but sound.
Not on a main line clearance, the post-clearance pass is part of the job and you watch it with us. A standalone inspection, such as a pre-purchase sewer scope, is a scheduled visit and is priced separately.
If the fault is in the public main, it is the responsibility of the municipality, and the camera footage is what demonstrates that. If it is in your lateral, the run between the building and the connection; it is yours. We will show you where the fault is and how far out.
Yes, including out-of-hours work so a clearance does not close a kitchen during service, and scheduled maintenance cycles that prevent the emergency in the first place.
We will show you the camera footage, not just describe it.
