Sewer Line Repair in Oregon
Nobody should quote a sewer repair they have not seen. We camera the lateral, locate the fault, and show you the footage before anyone talks about digging.
Spot repairs, trenchless lining and full replacement, whichever the pipe actually needs.

Signs the lateral is failing
The sewer lateral is the single pipe carrying everything from your building to the public main or the septic tank. It is the one drain with no redundancy, and when it goes the whole property is affected at once.
The early symptoms look like ordinary drain trouble, which is why they get cabled repeatedly instead of investigated. Multiple fixtures running slow at the same time. A toilet that gurgles when the washing machine drains. A basement floor drain that backs up periodically and then clears on its own. Sewer smell in the yard or the crawl space. Blockages that return on a seasonal rhythm, a line that backs up every autumn is almost always a root problem, not a habits problem.
Later symptoms are structural and unmistakable. A patch of lawn that is greener, wetter or sunken along the line of the pipe. Water pooling in the yard with no rain to explain it. Rodent activity, which follows a broken sewer more reliably than any other clue. And a slab or foundation crack that appears in the same season as the drain trouble, which can mean the pipe has been washing soil out from under the structure for a while.
The one thing that separates a blockage from a failure is what the camera shows. Everything above is consistent with both.
Why Oregon laterals fail
Material and age do most of it, and Oregon housing stock hands us three specific problems.
Vitrified clay. Standard in Portland and the valley before the 1970s, laid in short sections with mortared or gasketed joints. The pipe material itself lasts remarkably well; the joints do not. Every joint is an entry point, ground movement offsets them, and root systems find them without fail.
Cast iron. Common in mid-century construction and in the interior drainage of older buildings. It corrodes from the inside, scaling and losing diameter for decades before it perforates. A cast iron lateral that is 70 years old is at the end of a normal service life, not prematurely failing.
Orangeburg. Bituminised wood fibre pipe, used widely in post-war construction into the early 1970s. It was never a long-life product. It softens, deforms into an oval and eventually collapses. If a camera finds Orangeburg, the conversation is about replacement rather than repair, there is nothing worth preserving.
On top of material, three mechanisms: root intrusion, which dominates west of the Cascades where big trees sit in wet ground; ground movement and settlement, which offsets joints and creates bellies where solids collect; and, in older properties, damage from previous work, a utility trench cut across a lateral, or a line crushed by vehicle loading over a driveway.
Backing up right now? That is an emergency call, not a quote request.

A camera goes in first, every time. It is the difference between a repair and an expensive experiment.
The inspection establishes what the pipe is made of, how long the run is, where the fault is and how far from the building, whether there is one discrete defect or general deterioration along the whole length, whether the pipe still holds its shape, and whether there is a belly holding standing water. It also finds the things nobody expected: a second lateral from a former outbuilding, a previous repair done badly, or a connection that was never properly made.
Alongside the camera we locate the fault from the surface with a sonde, so the position and depth are marked on the ground rather than estimated. That single step decides how much excavation a repair needs, and it is why a located repair costs less than an exploratory one.
You watch the footage and you keep a copy. If you get other quotes, that video is what lets you compare them on the same facts.
Spot repair, lining or replacement
Spot repair. One discrete defect, a crushed section, a single offset joint, a break where something was driven through the pipe, in a line that is otherwise sound. We excavate at the located point, cut out the damaged section, and join in new pipe. It is the cheapest option and, where the rest of the lateral genuinely is sound, the correct one. Where it goes wrong is when it is used on a line that is failing everywhere; you buy two years and then start again.
Trenchless lining. A resin-saturated liner is drawn into the existing pipe and cured in place, forming a continuous new pipe inside the old one. It seals every joint along its length, which ends root intrusion, and it needs only small access pits rather than an open trench. It suits a lateral that has lost its joints but kept its shape. It cannot fix a collapsed line, a severe belly or a pipe that has deformed, and it costs a little diameter. Covered in full under trenchless sewer repair.
Full replacement. Open trench, old pipe out, new pipe in at correct fall. It is the most disruptive and the most definitive, and it is the only real answer for Orangeburg, a collapsed line, a badly bellied run that needs regrading, or a lateral where the depth and route need to change. Where the route runs under a driveway or mature landscaping, pipe bursting can sometimes replace the line along its existing path without a full trench, that sits under sewer lateral replacement.
We price the options that genuinely apply to your line, side by side, with the footage in front of you. If lining is not appropriate we will say so rather than quote it and hope.
A quote without footage is a guess. Ask for the video.
Book a Camera InspectionWhere your responsibility ends
In most Oregon jurisdictions the property owner owns the lateral from the building to the connection at the public main, frequently including the section running under the street or sidewalk, which surprises people. The municipality owns the main itself.
That boundary decides who pays, so it is worth establishing before work starts rather than after. Camera footage with a located distance is what settles it: if the defect is at 62 feet and the property line is at 45, we know what we are dealing with. Where the fault turns out to be in the public main, we help you document it for the city, and you should not be paying us to repair it.
Some cities operate lateral assistance programmes or permit requirements specific to work in the right of way. Portland, Salem, Bend and Eugene all have their own procedures. We handle that paperwork as part of the job.
Permits, inspections and restoration
Sewer work is permitted work. Any repair beyond a straightforward like-for-like spot fix generally requires a permit and an inspection, and work in the public right of way requires additional authorisation and, often, traffic control.
We pull the permits, book the inspections, and give you the signed-off paperwork at the end. That documentation matters at resale far more than people expect; an unpermitted sewer replacement is a problem that surfaces during someone else's inspection years later.
Restoration is part of the quote, not an afterthought. Backfill compacted properly so the trench does not sink over the next two winters, hard surfaces reinstated, and landscaping put back to a described standard. We tell you plainly what will be disturbed and what it will look like afterwards, including which plantings cannot be saved.
What drives the cost
Depth and length are the two big ones, a lateral at four feet and a lateral at eleven feet are different jobs entirely, and the deeper one needs shoring. After that: what is on top of the line (lawn is easy, a concrete driveway or a mature tree is not), whether the work enters the public right of way, the pipe material, and which repair method the pipe can actually take.
A located spot repair in a lawn is the low end. A deep full replacement crossing a street with traffic control is the high end, and there is a wide spread between them. The camera inspection is what turns that range into a number.
We quote in writing, itemised, with the repair method stated and restoration included. If a cheaper method is viable we will tell you, even where it is the smaller job for us.
We price spot repair, lining and replacement side by side.

Sewer line repair, answered
You cannot tell from the symptoms alone, they overlap almost completely. A camera inspection settles it in under an hour, and on a line that has backed up more than once it is the cheapest money you will spend.
Often, yes. Trenchless lining needs only small access pits and suits a lateral that has lost its joints but kept its shape. It is not universal, a collapsed pipe, a severe belly or Orangeburg all need excavation.
A located spot repair is usually a day. Lining a lateral is typically one to two days including cure time. A full replacement runs two to four days depending on depth, length and what has to be cut through and reinstated.
Standard homeowner policies generally exclude the pipe itself as maintenance, though some cover resulting damage inside the building, and separate service line endorsements do exist. Check your wording. Sudden damage from an external cause is a different case from gradual deterioration.
In most Oregon jurisdictions the lateral is yours right up to the main, including the section under the street, but the main itself is not. Located camera footage establishes which side of that line the fault sits on, and work in the right of way needs its own permit and traffic control.
A single root intrusion in a sound clay line can reasonably be managed with jetting on a cycle. A deforming Orangeburg line, a collapse or a belly holding standing water will not improve and gets more expensive as the surrounding soil washes out. The footage tells you which one you have.
