Sewer Lateral Replacement in Oregon
When the line is beyond repair, replacing it properly once is cheaper than repairing it three times. The work is disruptive, it is knowable in advance, and we will tell you exactly what your yard looks like afterwards.
Open-cut and pipe bursting. Permits, inspections and restoration included in the quote.

When replacement is the right call
Replacement is the answer when there is nothing left worth preserving, and there are four clear cases.
Orangeburg. Bituminised fibre pipe has no structural integrity to line and a service life that expired decades ago. Once a camera identifies it, replacement is the only honest recommendation. Anyone offering to line it is selling you a problem.
Collapse. A pipe that has failed structurally cannot be lined, and often cannot be burst either if the cable will not pass. Open-cut is the method.
A significant belly. Every trenchless method follows the existing path. A low section holding standing water keeps holding it in a shiny new liner. Regrading to correct fall means excavating and rebedding, there is no alternative, and this is the case most often glossed over in cheaper quotes.
General deterioration. Multiple unrelated defects along a line whose material is at the end of its life. Spot repairs on a pipe like that are a subscription. Replacing it once resolves it for fifty years.
Where the line does not fall into those categories, we would rather line it or spot-repair it, and we will say so. A replacement quoted on a pipe that only needed a joint fixed is the most expensive mistake in this trade.
Open-cut and pipe bursting
Open-cut is the conventional method: excavate along the line, remove the old pipe, lay new pipe on properly compacted bedding at the correct fall, connect at both ends, inspect, backfill and reinstate. It is the most disruptive method and the most complete; it is the only one that can change the grade, change the route, or change the depth, and it lets us see and correct everything along the run.
Pipe bursting pulls a bursting head through the existing lateral, fracturing it outwards while drawing new HDPE pipe in behind. Access pits at each end rather than a trench along the length. It replaces the pipe at full diameter, or upsizes it, along the existing route, which is its strength and its limitation: it cannot correct a belly, because it follows the same path.
Bursting also needs the corridor around the pipe to be clear. Fracturing a line outwards displaces soil, so a gas service, a water line or a conduit running close alongside is a genuine constraint. Utility location precedes any bursting quote.
Where both are viable we price both, from the same footage, with restoration included in each so the comparison is honest.
We do not quote a replacement without seeing the footage first.

For open-cut replacement, PVC to the applicable schedule is the standard: rigid, smooth-bored, jointed with solvent weld or gasketed couplings, and effectively immune to the root and corrosion mechanisms that killed the old line. Correct bedding matters as much as the pipe, a good pipe laid on poor bedding develops the same bellies within a decade.
For pipe bursting, HDPE fused into a continuous length. Because the joints are heat-fused, the finished line has no joints at all along the burst section, which is the same property that makes lining root-proof.
Cleanouts go in as part of the work, at the building, and at intermediate points on a long run. If the old line had none, this is the moment that gets fixed, and every future inspection or clearance is cheaper for it.
The connection at the public main is remade properly rather than adapted onto whatever was there. That connection is a common failure point in older work and it is inspected.
How a replacement runs
Camera inspection and surface location first, always, with depths marked along the route. Then utility locates, gas, water, power, telecoms, before anything is dug or burst.
Permits are pulled, and where the work enters the public right of way, the additional authorisation and any traffic control are arranged. That paperwork is on us, not you.
Then the work itself: excavation or pits, removal or bursting, new pipe laid to grade, connections made at the building and at the main. The line is inspected by the authority before it is covered, that inspection is why nobody should be backfilling a sewer trench the same hour they finish laying it.
Backfill is compacted in lifts, not dumped. This is the single most common corner cut in sewer work and you find out about it two winters later when a trench-shaped depression appears across the lawn. Then surfaces are reinstated and the site cleaned.
Typical residential replacement is two to four days depending on depth, length and what has to be cut and put back. Bursting is often faster.

Book a Site AssessmentPermits, right of way and inspections
Sewer replacement is permitted work everywhere in Oregon. Work in the public right of way, which is most replacements, since the lateral usually runs under the sidewalk or street to reach the main, requires separate authorisation from the jurisdiction, and frequently traffic control.
Portland, Salem, Eugene, Bend and the smaller jurisdictions each have their own procedures, fee structures and inspection expectations. We handle all of it and build the fees into the quote rather than adding them later.
You get the signed-off documentation at completion. Keep it. An unpermitted sewer replacement is a defect that surfaces during a buyer inspection years later and costs more to resolve then than the permit did now.
Restoration and what your yard looks like after
We tell you before the work starts what will be disturbed, in specific terms. Which stretch of lawn. Whether the driveway is cut and how wide the patch will be. Which shrubs come out and which of those can realistically be replanted. Whether a tree close to the line will survive having a trench beside it, sometimes the honest answer is no, and it is better said in the quote than on the day.
Restoration in our quotes means: trench backfilled and compacted in lifts, topsoil replaced, lawn areas seeded or turfed to an agreed standard, hard surfaces cut cleanly and reinstated in matching material, and the site left clean. Concrete and asphalt patches will be visible, nobody can make a driveway cut invisible, and we will show you what the patch will look like rather than let you imagine otherwise.
When comparing quotes, check what each one includes here. Restoration is where a cheap number becomes an expensive job.
What drives the cost
Depth first, a lateral at four feet and one at eleven are different jobs, and deep work needs shoring for safety. Then length, then what is on top: lawn is cheap, a concrete driveway, a retaining wall or a mature tree is not. Then whether the work enters the right of way, which adds permit costs and often traffic control.
Method matters less than people expect, because the pipe is a small fraction of the total. Bursting saves surface reinstatement and costs more in equipment; on a line under a driveway it usually wins, on an open lawn it usually does not.
Quotes are written and itemised, with permits and restoration included and the method stated. If a cheaper method would genuinely serve, we will tell you, a spot repair or a liner is less work for us and the right recommendation more often than the industry admits.

Sewer lateral replacement, answered
Usually hours rather than days, the line is disconnected only while the new pipe is being connected at each end. We tell you the window in advance so you can plan around it, and on a multi-day job the system is generally usable overnight.
In most Oregon jurisdictions the lateral is the property owner's responsibility all the way to the main, including under the street. If the failure is in that section, yes. If the failure is in the main itself, that is the municipality.
Sometimes, pipe bursting works along the existing route with pits at each end, so a driveway crossing can often be preserved. It depends on the pipe condition and on what other utilities run near the line.
PVC and fused HDPE are both rated well beyond fifty years, and neither corrodes nor admits roots at joints. Correct bedding and fall matter as much as the material for reaching that.
Lawn recovers fully in a season with proper topsoil and seeding, and we quote for that. Shrubs are usually replantable. A mature tree with a trench cut through its root plate may not survive, and we will say so before we start rather than after.
Some Oregon jurisdictions run lateral assistance or loan programmes, and eligibility varies by city and by circumstance. We will tell you what exists where you are, though the application is between you and the jurisdiction.
