Between the river and the bluff
Rufus occupies a narrow shelf between the Columbia and a steep basalt bluff, at the dry, windy end of the Gorge. The town is small, the ground is rocky, and the wind is close to constant. For plumbing that combination produces a specific pattern: exposed runs and pipe in unheated space fail in cold snaps that would be harmless inland, excavation is unpredictable because rock sits close to the surface, and properties at different levels on the shelf can run at very different water pressures.
Water is hard, as it is throughout the east Gorge, so scale is a constant background problem, coated heater elements, cemented fill valves, heaters failing early. Treatment sized against a water test is worth the money; sized against a guess it usually is not. Housing is a mix of mid-century and older, with galvanized behind some walls and clay laterals in the older parts of the grid, plus a share of properties serving river visitors and seasonal use.
Wind is the multiplier
The Gorge funnels wind hardest at this end, and wind is what turns a marginal freeze into a burst pipe. Insulation, frost-proof bibs and rerouting a supply line off an exposed wall are the cheap fixes that stop the annual repeat. We do a good amount of that preventive work in autumn, and considerably more emergency thaw work in January for the properties that skipped it.

Freeze, thaw and burst repair. Wind-driven failures in crawl spaces, garages, exposed runs and unheated buildings. Controlled heat only, then repair and insulation.
Hard water and scale. Heaters failing early, cemented valves, coated elements. Flush, replace, treat from a test.
Pressure correction. Different levels on the shelf run at different pressures; reducing valves and boosters as the measurement dictates.
Sewer and lateral work in basalt. Camera and locate before any trench, and price lining alongside excavation because rock is close to the surface.
Galvanized replacement. Rust-tinted water and falling pressure in the older housing.
Winterization for seasonal properties. River-oriented places that sit unused part of the year. Drained, blown out, valves set.

Rufus plumbing, answered
Wind. The Gorge funnels it hardest at this end, and wind strips heat from crawl spaces, garages and exposed runs. Pipe fails here at temperatures that cause no trouble in sheltered country.
Insulation, frost-proof hose bibs, and in some cases rerouting a supply line off an exposed wall. Modest autumn work that costs far less than a January burst and the water damage that follows.
Yes, as it is throughout the east Gorge. Scale coats heater elements and cements valves. Treatment works well when sized from a water test.
Sometimes, but expect rock, basalt sits close to the surface. We camera and locate first and price lining alongside open excavation so you can compare honestly.
Have it winterized: drained, blown out, valves set correctly and the heater handled. A split line at an unoccupied property runs until someone arrives.
It is on our east-Gorge run from The Dalles, so routine work is generally same day or next and emergencies are prioritised.
